Chestnut Don Horse Custom

Hello, my friends! Meet Kedr (Cedar), a gentle gelding sculpted by Mr. ANki, 3D printed and cast in resin in paddock scale, then customized and painted by me, Anastasia Chernykh, with great care and attention to detail.

The model was originally sculpted as a Budyonny horse, but I decided to paint him as a Don horse - a breed from my homeland, famous for its bright golden chestnut coats and history as a cavalry horse. I did quite a bit of customization work, refining the body and legs, adding details such as veins and wrinkles, resculpting the mane and tail and correcting the hooves.

Chestnut is not the easiest color for me to paint, so I tried to make it more rich and interesting by adding many subtle shades and carefully highlighting the muscles and other tiny details. The mane and tail are painted with layered sandy, reddish, brown tones to avoid a flat look. In the end I added bright markings and a brand inspired by those used for Don horses at stud farms, indicating the model’s serial number and year of completion.

In my work I used acrylics, pastels and metallic pigments, giving the coat a gentle shine in different lighting. The model is sealed with several layers of satin and matte varnish. Hooves are finished in satin, while the eyes and nostrils are glossed for a realistic look.
The model comes to his new home with my studio certificate and a tiny ribbon halter.
