“The Witching Hour”
The stable is getting dark, and the sun is setting. Shadows get long, and that’s where the nightmare begins for this crabby mare. It’s one whole hour past dinnertime, and this gal is HANGRY. That gelding getting too close? Back off, buddy! Don’t you dare get near my feed bucket! She’s not having ANY of it.
This mare is furious that you thought it was okay to be late coming home. How dare you! You thought you had time to stop by the farm down the road on your way home, and enjoy that latte and a chat with friends. Did you dally too long comparing the best pumpkins to carve? But what about HER feelings? She can smell that blonde fur on your hands, too. Did you actually pet your friend’s Corgi? While she waited for her grain, sad and neglected? Some nerve you have there. You’re going to have to offer a LOT of treats, in order for this mare to forgive your dirty tricks.
I’ve nicknamed this mare “Witching Hour” for the worst hour of the day. Not middle of the night. I’m talking about the hour where your tummy is rumbling, and you can’t get to the feed bag before tempers flare. If only she had a snack sized Snickers bar in her Halloween stash, maybe then she wouldn’t look so upset, but alas, there’s not a trace of sweet feed to be found, only pathetic, dry grass hay. (Yuck!)
As soon as I saw this Traditional scale “Warden” by Maggie Bennett, I knew that she had to be the REDDEST of the RED mares. I went beyond browns and added deep aged copper and even some burgundy to the mix. Her color is hard to capture - as usual - as my phone tends to make colors too bright. Her actual shade is a deep reddish brown, more of a rich sorrel. She does have some dapples, but I kept them subtle, as dapples on Arabians tend to be less extreme.
Her mane and tail have removable tendrils, which attach via magnets. Her hair is a shade brighter and the wisps have a bit of flaxen on the ends. I decided to keep her markings fairly subdued, to really keep the “red” focus without distraction, but I did make one little peekaboo spot on her blaze for interest, and to draw the viewer’s focus to her lovely, ultra-detailed face.
I also added the subtle “blue pupils” effect to her eyes - a slightly reflective blue tint that’s seen on real horses. I don’t paint it on every model, only the ones that I think can really benefit from this detail. This can be overdone, so I try to keep hit that “just right” spot where it’s there but not obvious. If you tilt her face at a certain angle, you’ll notice that little flash of blue color. It’s more obvious on video, so please check out my Instagram to see more @: studio_sommer
Her starting bid is only $1150, which is reasonable when considering the base price of the resin is $450 - if you are lucky enough to snag one from Maggie’s sales! There is NO RESERVE. This gal is ready to take to the ring immediately!
Trades are not needed, however if you already have purchased a "Warden" blank resin, I am happy to take yours in exchange for full purchase price credit. The blank could also work as a down payment, if you need time pays.
Time payments are welcome, preferably 4 months or less, although I will extend to 6 months or possibly longer if her bids exceed $1500. Shipping will be additional.
I do have some reservations about International shipping, because I have concerns that any insurance claims would not be honored, if the package is lost or damaged, because the USPS has ignored my past International claims. Any International purchases would be with the understanding that I am NOT responsible for loss or damage - once the package leaves my hands, I can not guarantee that even a fully insured package may be covered, as that is dependent on the company providing the insurance. Painted items are non replaceable and once the box leaves my hands, it is out of my control. Of course I would box and pack extremely well.
I appreciate you taking the time to view my auction, and thank you so much for supporting my art. Happy Bidding!
